Yum gives Ghaiyyath first Stakes winner in Australia

Three-year-old daughter powers home to win Listed Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield

Darley’s former champion galloper Ghaiyyath sired his first Stakes winner in Australia – and his fifth over the past two months worldwide – when the well-named Yum won the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes over 1,400m at Caulfield on Saturday, 20 September.

The three-year-old filly, trained by John McArdle at Mornington and partnered by Jamie Mott, was ridden quietly early before surging down the centre of the home straight to overpower Chateau Eze and Zany Girl in the final 50m.

It was Yum’s second win from four starts and her first at Stakes level, lifting her prize-money and bonuses tally to $144,785.

Out of the Australian mare Dream Food, Yum was bred by K.W. Breese in Victoria and offered by Armidale Stud at the 2024 Magic Millions Tasmania Yearling Sale.

Yum has a yearling half-sister by Pinatubo and her dam was covered by Kermadec (NZ) last season.

A four-time G1 winner and Horse of the Year in Europe in 2020, Ghaiyyath was also the highest-ranked galloper in the world the same year.

Since commencing shuttling stud duties, Ghaiyyath has sired 57 winners of 94 races and now has six individual Stakes winners of eight Black-Type events.

On July 10, Opera Ballo (out of Dubai Opera) won the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes over 1609m at Newmarket, a week before Al Uqda (Tampa Dream) took out the Listed Prix Madame Jean Couturie (2,000m) at Vichy.

The Padre (Shalanaya) then won the Listed La Jolla Handicap over 1,700m at Del Mar on 3 August, three weeks prior to My Highness (Majestic Queen) capturing the G2 Prix du Calvados (1,400m) at Deauville.

The Padre then made it a double when he scored in the G2 Del Mar Derby over 1,800m on 31 August.
