Night Of Thunder sires first and third home in G3 Acomb Stakes

Progressive colt Gewan remains unbeaten with impressive victory at York

Night Of Thunder sired a new juvenile Group winner on Wednesday, 20 August when Gewan successfully stepped up in class to land the G3 Acomb Stakes at York.

The Andrew Balding-trained colt broke smartly from the stalls and was prominent throughout the seven-furlong contest, quickening readily inside the final two and kept on well close to home to win by a length and a half. Fellow Night Of Thunder colt Distant Storm added his first Black Type to his record, finishing third despite racing very keenly early on.

Gewan is now unbeaten in two starts, having broken his maiden at Newbury on 18 July. He holds entries in the G2 Champagne at Doncaster and the G1 Darley Dewhurst.

Bred by Overbury Stallions Ltd and Dukes Stud, Gewan is out of the Stakes-placed Lethal Force mare Grey Mystere and is from the family of G1 winner Coquerelle.

Gewan is one of no fewer than 22 2025 Black Type winners for Night Of Thunder, currently atop the UK/IRE sires’ Championship. He has four G1 winners so far this year in 1,000 Guineas heroine Desert Flower, G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stake winner Ombudsman, plus US top-flight winners Choisya and Dynamic Pricing.
